WICHITA, KAN. – The Eutectic women's volleyball team finished up Day 2 of the Friends University Quad on Saturday, falling in five-set nailbiter to Arlington Baptist College (Texas) and then suffering a straight-set loss to Baker University (Kan.).
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:
Arlington Baptist def. UHSP, 3-2 (25-17, 19-25, 28-26, 25-27, 15-10)
- In their first-ever meeting, Arlington (1-0) and UHSP battled for every point, playing extra points in two of the five sets.
- Despite an early UHSP lead, the Patriots took Set 1, 25-17. But, buoyed by kills from Hannah Kynaston and Sumanpreet Kaur (assisted by Jenna Brinson) and multiple aces from MaKenzie Uribe, the Eutectics came from behind to win the second set 25-19.
- The UHSP offense pounded down 18 kills in the third set, but wound up on the losing end, falling 28-26. The Euts then gave the Patriots a taste of their own medicine, digging out two extra points to tie the score at two apiece with a 27-25 Set 4 victory with impressive 72% attacking.
- In the deciding final set, the Eutectics lost the lead following two service aces from ABU's Payton Koller, swinging the momentum to clinch the match for the Patriots with a final set score of 15-10.
- Hannah Kynaston racked up 17 kills on 39 attempts in the match. Jenna Brinson put up 46 assists, while Alani Hicks recorded 15 digs and MaKenzie Uribe notched three aces.
Baker def. UHSP, 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-15)
- The Baker Wildcats (3-1) came from behind in the first set with a seven-point run to take a 17-8 lead that the Eutectics were unable to surmount. The Wildcats held the momentum through the end of the set, closing it out with three kills for a 25-14 win.
- The Eutectics, again, took an early lead in Set 2, up 13-8, but the Wildcats gradually them, tyin the match at 19-19, then winning six of the next eight points for the 25-21 win.
- Again, the Purple and Gold got out of the gate in the third set, going up 4-1 as the Baker squad challenged them from behind, tying it up at 5-5. The team fought for the lead until at 10-10, a four-point run by the Wildcats swung the momentum in their favor for the remainder of the match. Baker won the final five points in a row for a 25-15 set win resulting in a straight-set match win for the Wildcats.
- Alani Hicks led the Euts in kills and digs with six and 10, respectively. Jenna Brinson put up 20 assists, and Hannah Duggan, Lilly Hollis and Avanell Traylor each posted service aces in the match.
NEXT UP:
After five matches, the Eutectics are still looking for their first victory of the season. On Wednesday, Sept. 3, they play in town at Webster University in Webster Groves, Mo., at 7 p.m. The UHSP home opener is scheduled for the following night, Thursday, Sept. 4, at 6 p.m. versus Brescia University (Ky.).
