Volleyball Picks Up First Win of Season; Drops Match 2 to Host IU-East
Volleyball traveled to Indiana University-East on Friday for the Red Wolves Invitational. First up on their schedule was Kentucky Christian University. The Euts came out fired up and ready to play.
The match began with a lot of back and forth, but the Eutectics fell behind 6-10. With some big offensive kills from Mackenzie Wagner (JR/Walford, Iowa), the Eutectics came back and eventually pulled away to take set one 25-22. They carried their momentum into set two, and with six kills in the set from Tessa Butt (SO/Portage, Mich.), were able to win 25-19. In set three, the Euts pulled ahead early but were not able to hold on to the lead, eventually falling behind 11-12. An ace from Mackenzie Wagner and two big kills from Sierra Sagucio (FR/Honolulu, Hawaii) shifted the momentum back in favor of STLCOP for the next six points. Unfortunately, with some big blocks from the Knights, the Euts could not hang on and eventually fell 22-25. Both teams came out determined in set 4 with back and forth play all the way to a score of 19-19. But with a serve-out for the Knights and a huge block from Brianna Landrum (SO/Ironton, Mo.) and Mackenzie Wagner, the Euts stepped up and took the set 25-22 to earn their first win of the season. Mackenzie Wagner and Cassady Reno (SO/O'Fallon, Ill.) led the team offensively with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Outside hitters Aften Richter (SO/Highland, Ill.) and Sierra Sagucio each had 13 digs in the match.
After a long break following match one, the Eutectics failed to get anything going against tournament host IU-East, losing in straight sets 15-25, 12-25, 15-25. Despite nine kills from Mackenzie Wagner, the Red Wolves' forty-five kills and ten team blocks were just too much for the Euts to handle.
The Eutectics head back to Lingle Court Saturday to take on IU-Kokomo (6-1) at 10:30 am EST and Indiana Tech (4-2) at 2:30 pm EST.
