Eutectics Split Grueling Battles
In a day packed with adrenaline-pumping action, the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy (UHSP) Eutectics Men's Volleyball team delivered two thrilling performances, splitting victories against tough opponents. The Eutectics faced off against the Campbellsville University Tigers and the Cumberland University Phoenix.
The first match of the day saw the Eutectics locked in a fierce battle against the Tigers, who came into the game with a 15-7 record on the season. Despite a valiant effort from the Eutectics in their search for redemption from their 3-set loss last month, they ultimately succumbed to the Tigers in four sets, with scores of 25-22, 19-25, 23-25, 19-25.
From the onset, it was evident that both teams were evenly matched, with the score seesawing back and forth. The Eutectics, led by standout performances from Grant Hoover, Cameron Werner, and Cole Cwiklowski, fought tooth and nail to assert their dominance. Hoover's impressive 20 kills spearheaded the offensive effort, while Werner showcased his defensive skill with one solo and five assisted blocks. Cwiklowski orchestrated the team's plays with precision, tallying a double-double with 39 assists and 14 digs.
Despite facing a resilient Campbellsville squad, the Eutectics displayed resilience and tenacity, rallying from behind multiple times throughout the match. However, the Tigers' tough hitting prowess proved to be the decisive factor, as they outgunned the Eutectics with a .248 to .180 hitting percentage. Despite the setback, UHSP showcased their fighting spirit and determination, setting the stage for an exhilarating showdown in their second match of the day.
Following their hard-fought battle against Campbellsville, the Euts squared off against the Cumberland University Phoenix (6-10) in a high-stakes showdown. The two teams have only met once before back in 2022, when the Phoenix came out on top in 4 sets. So, the Eutectics entered the match with the resolve to win.
The match unfolded as a captivating display of skill and determination from both sides, with neither team willing to concede an inch. The Eutectics, buoyed by a stellar offensive performance from Grant Hoover and Connor Behymer, surged ahead to claim a hard-fought victory in four sets, with scores of 25-21, 29-27, 23-25, 27-25.
Hoover, once again, proved to be the linchpin of the Eutectics' offense, delivering a season/career-high 25 kills with a remarkable .452 hitting percentage. Behymer provided crucial support with 13 kills of his own, showcasing his ability to deliver under pressure, putting down the final two kills in the fourth set. Xavier Gamayo anchored the defense with 16 digs, while Cole Cwiklowski dished out a career-high 60 assists.
With today's split, the UHSP Eutectics now boast a 15-7 record on the season, reaffirming their status as a force to be reckoned with in collegiate volleyball. They have a quick turnaround, as they gear up for their next challenge at 7pm on Monday against the Fontbonne University Griffins (5-13) at Fontbonne.
