McPike and Wakeland Win, Macheras Breaks Record as UHSP Takes Second at AMC Last Chance Meet
Alyssa McPike (FR/Monticello, Ill.) (SO/Monticello, Ill.) and Allison Wakeland (SO/Hillsboro, Mo.) (JR/Hillsboro, Mo.) won their events, while Clara Macheras (FR/Gurnee, Ill. ) (JR/Gurnee, Ill. ) broke her own record in route to a second-place team finish at the American Midwest Conference (AMC) Last Chance meet. The event took place on Saturday at Principia College in Elsah, Ill.
Due to COVID restrictions, the AMC canceled the Indoor Championships this year, opting to hold a Last Chance meet instead, restricting the number of entrants from each of the eight teams participating.
While she will not hold the official conference champion title due to the changes in the meet's format, Alyssa McPike successfully repeated her 2020 Indoor 800m AMC Champion performance with a first-place finish (of 6) on Saturday. Her time of 2:30.13 in the 800m run was just .10 second off her own UHSP record. Her first-place finish scored 10 points for the Eutectic team.
Allison Wakeland beat out six other runners to win the mile run with a time of 5:45.65, to score 10 points for the Eutectics.
Clara Macheras broke her own record in the shot put by .26 meters with a toss of 11.70m. The mark was good enough for second place (of 11) and notched eight points for UHSP. Macheras also scored five points in the weight throw with a fourth-place finish (of 11) at 13.35m. Between the two events, Macheras was the team's high scorer at the meet, totaling 13 points.
All 12 UHSP athletes entered in the meet scored to contribute to the team's second-place finish of eight teams.
Abbey Wallace (FR/Lee's Summit, Mo.) and Claudia LaBruyere (FR/Lake St. Louis, Mo.) each scored eight points with second-place finishes in their events. Wallace took second in the 400m dash with PR time of 1:07.74. LaBruyere was second in the 800m run at 2:41.02.
Stevi Price (SO/New Athens, Ill. ) (JR/New Athens, Ill. ) (600m), Sophie Eastham (FR/Waltonville, Ill.) (800m), Madison Reinhold (FR) (60m hurdles), and Gabrielle Morgan (JR/Collinsville, Ill.) (shot put) scored five points apiece for their fourth-place finishes. Samantha Senko (FR/Elwood, Ill.) scored a total of eight points with two fifth-place finishes in the 60m hurdles and the 200m dash. Ajia Vigil (FR/Columbia, Mo.) scored three points for sixth place in the 800m, Mikayla Sherril scored two points (7th place) in the mile, and Gabrielle Morgan added one more point for eighth place in the weight throw.
The Eutectic team totaled 83 points to finish just behind the meet champion Columbia College (90 points), and beat out six other conference teams. The third-place team was William Woods University with 78 points.
The Last Chance meet may not be the final indoor competition for the Eutectic team. UHSP hopes to gain admittance into a limited invitation last indoor meet at the Principia venue on Friday, Feb. 26.
