ST. LOUIS, MO. - The University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy was looking for their first conference win on Saturday afternoon at St. Louis University High as William Woods was in town for an American Midwest Conference match. The Eutectics had never beaten the Owls as they were winless in nine tries against their in-state rivals.
William Woods got on the board first at 28:21 when Zoe Hargis set up Owls' leading scorer Megan Hughes for a 1-0 lead on her fourth of the year. Just short of five minutes later Sydney Balducci delivered a cross to Cindy Gonzalez that she buried in the high right corner of the cage for a 2-0 lead at the break. The field was heavily tilted in favor of the Owls in the first half as William Woods outshot UHSP 17-1.
The Owls wasted no time adding to their lead in the second half. Hughes delivered a beautiful 30-yard through ball to Cindy Gonzalez who dribbled in and from 20-yards away drilled one to the left side of the net for a 3-0 advantage. The Eutectics became a little more aggressive and tired to use long kicks over the top of the Owls' defense to try and set up their play makers. Off one of those missed chances, Katlyn Akers deflected a pass from an Owls defender off a goal kick by the Owls. Akers was able to work around the Owls' defender in the right corner of the six-yard box and patiently dribbled in all the way to the front of the net. Trying to find a shooting lane on WWU netminder Belle Boschert, Akers went short side sneaking one inside the right post for a 3-1 game. The Owls would cap the scoring on a Lauren Helmert goal from Paige Hicks for a 4-1 win.
Next Saturday, the Eutectics (1-4, 0-2) play the first of back-to-back AMC road contests as they visit Stephens College before visiting Central Baptist on Oct. 10. UHSP hosts William Baptist on Oct. 14 for their next home game.
