Eutectics Break Mustangs with Third-Quarter Surge

ST. LOUIS, MO. – The Eutectic women's lacrosse team dominated possession and had no trouble taming the Mount Mercy University Mustangs in a home game at Lou Fusz Athletic Complex on Friday afternoon. In their first Heart of America Athletic Conference contest of the season, the UHSP team took down the Mustangs (0-2) with a score of 17-4.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Ella Penke and Caeley Doran scored the first two goals for UHSP unassisted within the first two minutes of play. Mount Mercy used a power play to get on the board with five minutes left in the first quarter, but Doran and Michelle Le followed up by converting free-position shots to goals to make it 4-1 heading into the second quarter.
  • The Mustangs opened the second quarter with a man-up free-position goal to make it 4-2 before Melanie Doub scored two in a row (assisted by Josie Hayden and Molly Biermann) then assisted Hayden for the final goal of the half. The score was 7-2 at halftime.
  • UHSP owned the third period, scoring seven goals without allowing any from MMU. Doran scored two more, Sadi Adams scored two, and Hayden and Doub each scored another. Marisa Podio's free-position goal at 6:59 put the Euts up by 10 (12-2) to keep the clock running for the remainder of the game. The Eutectics held a 14-2 lead with 15 minutes to go.
  • Mount Mercy was able to put two goals in the net in the fourth quarter, but UHSP's Adams and Penke combined for three to increase the home-team lead to 17-4 by the final buzzer.
  • Sadi Adams led the Eutectic offense with four goals on five shots with two assists. Caeley Doran also scored four goals for UHSP. Melanie Doub earned a hat trick and added two assists, while Josie Hayden and Ella Penke each recorded two goals and one assist. Michelle Le and Brianna Dixon collected six and five ground balls apiece, while Hayden dominated the draw controls with six. UHSP goalkeeper Brianna Dixon recorded three saves in the match.

UP NEXT:

The Eutectics are now 2-4 overall and 1-0 in Conference competition. Since their originally scheduled match at Bethel University on Monday was cancelled due to forecasted low temperatures, the Eutectics will be back on their home field to host Benedictine University (6-0) for their next Conference game on Saturday, Mar. 28, at 1 p.m.
