Spartans Overtake Eutectics with Second-Half Surge

ST. LOUIS, MO. – The Eutectic men's basketball team took to their home court on Saturday in front of a UHSP reunion-weekend crowd in search of their first-ever victory over Missouri Baptist University (3-0). With the Eutectics holding a 44-39 lead at halftime, the Spartans stunned the home team with a second-half push, outscoring the Eutectics 49-37 in the period to earn the 88-81 win and secure their undefeated status over the Eutectics in 23 matchups.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

MBU 88, UHSP 81

  • The Eutectics got off to a great start, taking a 15-10 lead with Justin Coleman's triple assisted by Landon Engelage after five minutes.
  • Two free throws from David Moore, a three-point field goal from Engelage, and a layup from Coleman after a steal by Carmello Bostwick gave UHSP a 37-23 with six minutes left in the first period.
  • The Spartans cut that lead to five (44-39) during the two minutes before halftime with two layups and two layups from Javaris Moye and two free throws from Alex Wineholt.
  • Less than two minutes into the second half, Merquiche Lewis sunk a layup to tie the game at 47 apiece and begin a battle for the lead.
  • With 10 minutes left, UHSP led 62-60, but a six-point scoring run by MBU put them ahead 75-67 with around six minutes to go. The Eutectics were unable to catch the Spartans in the final minutes.
  • With field goal percentage and rebounding stats were similar for each team, the Spartans capitalized on UHSP's 22 fouls to drain 21 of 28 free throws. MBU also scored 26 points off 17 Eutectic turnovers, and tallied 11 steals and five blocks.
  • Led by Jasmin Suvalija's 4-for-8 performance from the arc, the Eutectics went 10-23 to average 43.5% for three-point field goals compared to the Spartans' 21% (3-for-14).
  • Justin Coleman led the Eutectics with 21 points and six rebounds. Bryant Odunayo pitched in 20 points for UHSP, going 8-for-11 from the floor. Suvalija (15), Bostwick (10), Engelage (9), David Moore (2), and Brennen Walker (2) also scored for the Eutectics.
  • MBU's Javaris Moye led all scorers with 24 points.

Now 1-5, the Eutectics will enjoy a week off from competition before hosting Kansas Christian College (3-3) on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 3 p.m. in the UHSP gymnasium.
