Eutectics Cruise to Doubleheader Sweep Over Pioneers on Senior Day

ALTON, IL – The Eutectics baseball team hosted the Crowley's Ridge College Pioneers (16-19-1, 3-8-1 AMC) Saturday in a doubleheader to round out their three-game weekend series.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

GAME 1 – UHSP 14, CROWLEY'S RIDGE 4

  • The Eutectics took the early lead with an unearned run in the first. Holden Campbell laced a one-out double to right center and scored with Aiden Smith dropped a routine fly ball in left as UHSP led 1-0. It was one of two early errors by the Pioneers after having committed six the day before.
  • Crowley's Ridge took a 3-1 lead scoring three times in the third against UHSP starter Barrett Lohman. Kolby Webb had a two-run single up the middle and JP Wills doubled home Webb with a ball to deep center that sent UHSP centerfield Holden Campbell crashing into the wall.
  • Joe Celeste tied the game with a long two-run homer to left in the fourth scoring Jacob Grim who had an infield single. It was his first homer of the season.
  • After the Pioneers scored to take the lead with a run in the top of the fifth, the Eutectics broke it open scoring six times in the bottom of the frame. Nolan Harding and Jacob Grim had back-to-back RBI hits and Celeste drove a ball down the third base line with the bases loaded. Two scored and another came in as the ball got past the leftfielder. Caden Buxton added a sac fly to cap the frame.
  • Nolan Harding's second homer of the season highlighted a five-run sixth. Celeste drove in his fifth run of the game with a double and Dustin Witterholt plated one with a single.
  • Barrett Lohman picked up the win (4-2) after pitching a complete game. He gave nine hits, walked three and struck out four.
  • Brayden Mashek went the first four innings for Crowley's Ridge and took the loss (5-4). He saw six runs score against him, four earned, on six hits while walking two and fanning one.
  • Joe Celeste was 3-for-4 with 5 RBI's. Nolan Harding went 2-for-4 and drove in four.
  • UHSP had 14 base hits while CRC committed four errors in the game.

GAME 2 – UHSP 19, CROWLEY'S RIDGE 6

  • The Eutectics took an early lead in the first off a Jacob Grim RBI double, scoring Brandon Gibbs. This was the first of two doubles and five RBIs for Grim and three runs for Gibbs in the game.
  • The Eutectics added two more runs in the second inning, one of which came from a Pioneer wild pitch and the second from an error.
  • CRC battled back in the third to tie the game at three off a three-run homer from Lawson DeVault. However, that was short-lived, as the Eutectics added seven runs in their half of the inning to take a 10-3 lead. A hit leadoff batter led to a pitching change for the Pioneers. However, a pair of walks loaded the bases to set up a Dustin Aleck RBI single. Sebastian Villegas drew the RBI walk, and Barrett Bressette tripled to take the 8-3 lead. Brandon Gibbs followed suit with an RBI triple, and Holden Campbell drove him in to round out the seven-run inning.
  • Some pitching and field woes in the fourth helped the Eutectics tack on five more runs. RBIs in the inning came from a Bressette walk, a Campbell triple (3), and a Grim single (1).
  • A two-run homer from Pioneers' JP Willis gave CRC some hope, but four more runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by a Nolan Harding RBI single and another Grim double (3 RBIs), put the game further out of reach.
  • The Pioneers managed one more run in the seventh, but the Eutectics held strong to take the 19-6 win.
  • Jacob Grim nabbed his fourth win of the season (4-1), giving up five earned runs on four hits, and striking out six in six innings pitched. He also led the team, along with Dustin Aleck, with three hits. Grim also picked up a stolen base, second to Brandon Gibbs' two steals in the game.
  • The all-time series sees UHSP lead 5-2.
  • The day featured senior day prior to the start of the doubleheader. UHSP recognized 12 seniors before the first game.
