Late Mustang Offense Topples Eutectics in Game 3

ALTON, ILL. – After splitting Games 1 and 2 on Friday, the Eutectic baseball team closed out their first American Midwest Conference (AMC) series of the season against the Central Baptist Mustangs on Saturday at the UHSP home field at Lloyd Hopkins Field in Alton, Ill. In the top of the fifth inning, the Mustangs overtook the Eutectics' 3-0 lead with five runs, then a CBC offensive surge against four different UHSP pitchers in the eighth inning sealed the deal for the visiting team's victory at 17-3.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The Eutectics took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Deklan Riggs and Sebastian Villegas scored off hits from Jackson Hewitt and Villegas (double) and an RBI sac fly from Ethan Harrell.
  • The Eutectics added one more in the third, when Holden Campbell scored on a wild pitch.
  • UHSP pitcher Jacob Grim gave up only two hits and a walk and struck out four in the in the first four innings to keep the Mustangs scoreless. But, that changed in the top of the fifth, when the CBC hitters recorded three singles, a double, and two walks off the Eutectic starter to score five runs and take the lead before a Eutectic double play would end the inning.
  • After scoring one run in the seventh, the CBC offense pounded out seven hits and took advantage of an error to score 11 runs in the top of the eighth, as the UHSP bullpen took turns on the mound. Since the Eutectics couldn't generate any offense in the bottom of the inning, the scheduled nine-inning game was cut short at eight innings due to the 10-run rule.
  • Mustang reliever Ryan Meyer held the Eutectics to one hit in the final five innings, giving up three walks, and tallying four strikeouts.
  • Despite four stellar innings, Jacob Grim was charged with the loss on the mound for the Eutectics.

UP NEXT:

The Eutectics are now 8-12 overall and 1-2 in the AMC. Next up, they'll take a quick trip up to Jacksonville, Ill., for a non-conference doubleheader against Illinois College on Wednesday, Mar. 11, with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
