Mortarmer McPestle

Meet Morty the Eutectic

Mortarmer McPestle ("Morty" for short) is a Eutectic and the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis' beloved mascot. “Eutectic” describes the scientific process of two solids being combined to form a liquid. A common term in pharmacy, it is the perfect metaphor for UHSP's intercollegiate athletic program – combining athletics and a demanding academic program.

The name Eutectic was submitted by a student for consideration in the naming of a new mascot in 1993, when then St. Louis College of Pharmacy (STLCOP) joined the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) to compete at the intercollegiate level. Previously, the athletic teams were known as the Volunteers and were represented by a purple dinosaur named "Rex" (Rx). The name Eutectic was the favorite of several team names presented to students, faculty, and staff, which also included panthers, volunteers, and pioneers.

UHSP's unique mascot is a reflection of the university’s individuality and unique status as a pharmacy professional college, and one of only three private, freestanding pharmacy institutions in the country. In the fall of 2009, the university's mascot and athletic logos were redesigned to reflect a fiercer, brighter mascot.
